Since 1998, I've immersed myself in the world of horses, starting from the ground up as a working pupil and eventually assuming the role of equestrian lead. My journey took an unexpected turn when I encountered riding simulators, particularly Frank, one of the early models. Teaching on the simulator proved to be a revelation, offering a distinct perspective on the rider's influence on a real horse. This experience ignited a passion within me for innovative teaching methods and opened doors to a new realm of instruction.
Working closely with clients, I witnessed firsthand the remarkable benefits that simulators could offer both riders and horses alike. Encouraged by the insights gained, I made the bold decision to invest in my own simulator, Barney, in 2009. Over the course of 14 years, Barney became an invaluable tool, revealing the diverse journeys riders undertake. I've now had the opportunity to upgrade to the latest dressage simulator which I have called Roo!
Regardless of background or investment, I observed that without a solid foundation, riders often encounter similar challenges.
I've had the privilege of guiding countless individuals on their riding journeys, each lesson unique and tailored to the individual. I firmly believe that the key to a successful partnership lies in understanding the horse's character and adapting a learning style that resonates with both horse and rider. Witnessing the moment when riders realise their potential fills me with immense joy. Whether the teacher is a living, breathing horse or one made of plastic, the lessons learned are equally profound and transformative.
Roo the riding simulator is a life sized mechanical horse. It walks, trots, canters, and being well bred by Racewood can even turn her hoof at advanced dressage movements such as piaffe and half pass.
As with your real horse you can ride in a GP or dressage saddle and wear your normal riding clothes or comfortable trousers and sensible footwear (clean boots only please, Roo isn't fond of baths!).
The horse is controlled by either the instructor or rider. When the rider has control the horse responds to your commands the same way as a real horse. You can practice all sorts including transitions, rein contact, rising and sitting trot, and lateral work.
Roo also has a screen which shows you your balance and position in the saddle while collecting information from rein and leg sensors.
There is also a practice dressage test which can be played back for deeper analysis.
